How can I help a new cockateil adjust to his new home?

I just bought a new cockateil yesterday, and so far he won't eat or drink anything. He just sits on his perch all sad. He isn't sick. Is there anything I can do to help him adjust and feel comfortable and safe in his new home? I'm afraid he'll get sick, or even die if he doesn't start eating and drinking soon. How can I help a new cockateil adjust to his new home?Ok, I'll try not to ramble. For the next few days, put him in his own room, and LEAVE HIM ALONE! The stress from moving to a new home added to the stress of attention and handling can actually kill a bird! Leave him for a day or two, then start sitting in a chair near him and talking to him. You can also play little games to gain his trust like peek-a-boo (use a towel to cover your face, not your hands) and try feeding him special treats through the cage bars. He'll start eating and drinking soon, I promise.

If your bird is more than two years old, its possible that he is going through a depression as well.

Some people think that it is a good idea to slowly cover his cage with a towel so that he is not so overwhelmed by things. Mine just hissed at it though, the contrary thing. So apparently your bird may or may not have objections to the towel approach. How can I help a new cockateil adjust to his new home?It may be he is eating at night after everyone has gone to bed. Birds are most vulnerable when eating and drinking and due to him being in a new environment with strange sights and sounds he may be waiting until he feels safe to eat and drink. Are you using the same food as the pet shop? Birds are sensitive to changes of diet and anything new needs to be introduced slowly. Keep an eye on him over the next two or three days and if he is still not eating or especially if he still isn't drinking take him to the vets.
