How long for cat to adjust to new home?

My friend lost his house and couldn't keep his cat. I took it in because no shelter would. I have another small cat that is about 4 months old. The new cat is about 6-7 years old and very fat (30 pounds). How long should I give him to adjust to his new home before introducing them? I tried last night but they got into a staring match and my kitten got scared and ran away.



What is the best way to help him loose the extra pounds?How long for cat to adjust to new home?Rub a towel on each of them and then let the other smell it and leave the opposite kitten's towel with each of them every day after about a week you can start introducing them to each other I would try holding one securely tucked in your arms to make sure that she/he feels safe- and do it small amounts at a time my large cat wanted to come upstairs and smell around and I let him 2nd day and his nose touched my kitten while I was holding her and she FREAKED and kinda got sick from the stress of it! so do it SLOWLY!!!! and let them each wander around in the other's territory once in a while during that week(while the other is in their territory of course--basically let them switch rooms for a while to smell around and get them used to the other)I think if you do it this way it will go ok my kitten got really scared at first too!!But now the kitten and my 10 yr old male are playmates he even gave her a bath last night(was cute) and my kitten is very comfortable here--been a month)
